Barack Obama calls to harness sun, wind and soil to fuel cars and run factories

President Barack Obama’s inaugural address call to "harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories" signals a welcome commitment to renewable energy.

Brent Erickson, executive vice president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s (BIO) Industrial & Environmental Section, released the following statement: "President Obama has articulated a vision for renewable energy production as a solution to some of the most pressing problems facing the United States. His reference to harnessing the wind, the sun and the soil for energy production in his inaugural speech augurs well for advanced biofuels."

"Advanced biofuel energy should be at the center of the new administration’s ‘earth, wind and fire’ energy policy. The biotechnology industry, which provides the key technology for producing advanced biofuel from renewable resources, stands ready to provide new green jobs in the United States, develop secure sources of domestic energy, and ‘roll back the specter of a warming planet,’ as the president said.

“BIO and its member companies look forward to working with newly confirmed Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to achieve the goals of reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and diversifying energy production. Their expertise will be appreciated as the industry seeks to strengthen coordination with the Departments of Energy and Agriculture in rapidly commercializing advanced biofuels.”

BIO represents more than 1,200 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations.
