It is now more than ten years since the EU Landfill Directive set mandatory targets for the UK to cut landfill volumes or face hefty fines, and while some people face the deadlines with optimism, there is concern elsewhere that the UK’s overall approach to waste management is trailing behind continental Europe.
There was a time when the market for industrial waste shredding systems was limited to a specific range of companies with largely heavy duty waste disposal requirements. Technological... [more]
Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is designed to build consumer confidence in the growing sector of microgeneration technologies, by ensuring installation companies and products meet robust standards. The government backed scheme will certificate both products and installers for renewable technologies. By using MCS approved products and installers, consumers will be able to access grants towards the cost of installing renewable technologies.
HETAS now offers installer accreditation ... [more]
A new report from the London Assembly reveals that London’s rubbish could be used to generate electricity for up to two million homes and heat for up to 625,000 homes. The capital produces about 22 million tonnes of waste per year, including enough waste thrown out by Londoners to fill Canary Wharf tower every eight days. Most of this waste is taken outside of London and buried in landfill sites, but this is no longer sustainable.
The Assembly Environment Committee report, ‘Where there’s mu... [more]
A renewable energy co-operative has announced plans to make energy from farm muck and help boost Cumbria’s farming economy. Community Renewable Energy North West (CoRE NW), a co-operative based in Workington, plans to set up a number of farmers’ co-operatives, each of which will produce electricity and heat from manure and silage using anaerobic digestion.
The first of these farmers’ co-operatives, which will be at Middle Farm in Silloth, North West Cumbria, is expected to get planning permi... [more]
ELECSA has launched a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) for contractors installing renewable technologies in domestic properties. ELECSA already runs a Part P registration scheme for electrical contractors, and is now extending their straightforward approach to certification for renewables.
The primary aim of the MCS is to provide consumers with confidence and protection, by guaranteeing that microgeneration products and installers who carry the mark meet robust quality standards. T... [more]
A group of interdisciplinary scientists funded under the Rural Economy and Land Use Programme, with additional funding from Defra, has shown that many positive benefits could accrue from growing perennial biomass crops in the UK, such as short rotation coppice (SRC) willows and Miscanthus grass, for bioenergy and biofuels.
Planting energy crops such as trees and grasses to provide heat and electricity (and in future petrol) could bring positive benefits to our landscapes as well as help com... [more]
