The SBHS (Scottish Biomass Heat Scheme), unveiled by Jim Mather, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, will give grants of up to 40 per cent of project costs, capped at £100,000. The funding is open to small and medium-sized businesses to install renewable energy heating systems.
SMEs in England and Scotland can also borrow £5,000 to £200,000 interest-free for the installation of renewable energy or energy efficient plant – such as wind turbines, Solar PV and Biomass.

National Grid has drawn up a new concept for using local waste resources to provide local renewable gas. The blueprint for what are being called an Urban Energy Centres sets out a nationwide solution to providing renewable heat by efficiently harnessing the energy output from an integrated waste management system.
The concept outlines how waste streams from homes and businesses could be turned into renewable gas to maximise energy recovery:
o A centre, which could be sited at an in... [more]
The U.S. Department of Energy has identified switchgrass as an ideal dedicated energy crop. As a perennial, once established, switchgrass requires little or no tilling and minimal nitrogen fertilizer and other crop inputs. It can grow over nine feet high with deep roots that can sequester carbon in the root biomass instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. Similarly, fast-growing high-biomass (non-grain) sorghum hybrids can reach 20 feet tall, while requiring much less water than conventional... [more]
